Do Insurance Brokers in Hong Kong Charge Fees? Costs and Risks to Confirm Before Applying

Jurisdiction: Hong Kong | Information checked: 20 October 2026

An insurance broker in Hong Kong may receive commission from an insurer or fees paid by a client. Whether a separate client fee applies depends on the engagement and disclosure documents. “Free consultation” does not establish that the overall arrangement has no costs. Premiums, broker remuneration and charges within a policy are different matters and should be clarified separately.

Identify three types of payment

The first is the premium payable under the insurance contract. The second is the broker’s remuneration, which may be paid by the insurer or by the client under an agreement. The third is any charge set out in the product terms, such as surrender, withdrawal or investment-related charges for some products. Product structures differ: do not assume that every charge appears on a separate bill, or that an insurer-paid commission removes potential conflicts of interest from the broker’s advice. What should you obtain in writing before signing?

  • Which company provides the service, what work is included and what is excluded?
  • Will you pay a separate fee? Is it charged per engagement, as a fixed amount or on another basis? When is it payable, and is it refundable?
  • Does the broker receive remuneration from the insurer, and how are the relevant disclosures and potential conflicts explained?
  • Who receives the premium, how can the official receiving account be verified and how will you obtain proof of payment?

These are general questions, not a YFG or market-wide price list. When speaking with YFG, confirm costs using the relevant service entity’s written explanation, formal engagement documents and policy documents. Pay premiums in accordance with the insurer’s official payment instructions, not into an insurance intermediary’s personal account.

Compare guaranteed and non-guaranteed benefits separately

For policies with savings or investment elements, read the guaranteed benefits, non-guaranteed benefits and related illustrations separately. Illustrated non-guaranteed benefits should not be treated as amounts certain to be received at maturity. Check whether the policy currency matches the currency of your future spending, as exchange-rate movements may affect the funds available to you. Early surrender or withdrawals may result in charges or losses. Examine the figures for the relevant policy years and assess whether you can sustain the premium payments. Check claims conditions and financing risks

Review the main exclusions, health and other disclosure requirements, claims documents and deadlines. If premium financing is involved, separately assess the loan interest rate, collateral arrangements and possible requirements to provide additional funds or repay early. Higher borrowing costs or lower-than-expected policy performance may disrupt your budget. Insurance Authority: smart tips on premium financing

Keep the recommendation, fee disclosures, application and payment records. If policy terms differ from an oral explanation, seek clarification from the insurer or licensed service representative before proceeding.
