Choosing an Insurance Broker in Hong Kong: Roles, Licensing and Service Checks

Jurisdiction: Hong Kong | Information checked: 20 October 2026

When choosing an insurance broker in Hong Kong, first check the licences of both the company and the individual providing the service. Then compare the needs assessment, reasons for the recommendation, remuneration disclosures and ongoing support. Brand recognition, the number of business partners and a salesperson’s title cannot replace checks on the legal entity and the service being offered.

How do insurers, agents and brokers differ?

The insurer is the underwriting party to the insurance contract. An insurance broker represents the client in finding and arranging insurance suited to the client’s circumstances. An insurance agent represents the insurer or insurers that have appointed the agent. Both types of intermediary must meet the applicable conduct requirements. A broker’s access to products from different insurers does not mean that every recommendation compares the entire market. Ask which products were actually considered and why other options were not selected. Insurance Authority: intermediary roles and conflicts of interest

Step 1: Check the company and the individual

Search the Insurance Authority’s Register of Licensed Insurance Intermediaries separately for the broker company and the individual giving advice. Check the legal name, licence type, status, permitted lines of business and appointment details, and record the date of the search. A business card or licence screenshot is only a starting point; use the register and any clarification from the regulator. If the information is missing or inconsistent, pause the transaction and seek clarification. A licence does not mean that the regulator guarantees an intermediary’s performance or creditworthiness.

Step 2: Put the basis for your choice in writing

  • Explain your family responsibilities, existing cover, budget and intended holding period. Ask how the recommendation addresses these needs.
  • Request comparable options and examine the cover, exclusions, payment arrangements and long-term affordability, rather than illustrated returns alone.
  • Ask who pays the broker, whether you will pay a separate service fee and how potential conflicts of interest are handled.
  • Confirm who will support policy changes, renewal reminders and claims, and how communication records will be retained.

These are general checks. They do not imply that all brokers use the same charging model or promise the same services. The Insurance Authority emphasises disclosure of the fact that an insurer pays remuneration to a broker. Clients should still ask for the written arrangements that apply to their own case.

How can you identify YFG’s service entity?

This website’s insurance page identifies the Hong Kong entity as Yu Fung Broker Limited (昱豐保險經紀有限公司) and lists licence number FB1750. Search using the legal company name or licence number, rather than “YFG” alone. Licence status and permitted business should be checked against the Insurance Authority’s official register. Confirm the specific services and responsible entity in the service documents, and check the corresponding permitted scope. Explore YFG’s insurance and risk solutions.

This article provides general information and a checking framework, not an individual policy recommendation. Decisions should take account of your circumstances, formal advice and the insurance contract.
